Science doesn't have to take a backseat to reading. Adding science to your reading or conversely adding reading to science make both experiences richer and more rewarding.
Bring your Chromebook, so we can explore some resources for English Learners together! We'll check out EL Scorecard as a teacher resource and Snap & Read as a tool students can use to translate documents & website. You'll also learn how to interpret English language proficiency testing scores, plus leave with an understanding of the services that the English Language Development team provides to our English Learners.
Mastery Connect is a tool 6th - 12th can utilize to gain insight on how students are progressing on mastering standards. Mastery Connect offers a numerous variety of question types allowing instructors to create engaging questions and allowing students to demonstrate their knowledge in different ways. This allows the teacher to gain a more complete picture of how well a student has grasped material. Come learn about some of these new question types available to you!

The Science of Reading is just another pendulum swing, isn’t it? Teachers will leave with a greater knowledge of what exactly is the science of reading, why it’s important, and the different parts that make up the science of reading. Participants will learn how the SOR can be applied at the different grade levels.
Learn how to use Canva in the classroom! We'll go over the basics and some of the best features Canva has to offer. We will create a project (possibly a get-to-know-the-teacher poster) together, and participants can ask any questions about any problems they run into. Hopefully after the session, they will be able to implement Canva in their classrooms. This year, I have had my students use Canva for their presentations, and they LOVE using Canva. It is a bit of a learning curve if you're not familiar with the program, so my goal for this session is to get participants acquainted with all Canva has to offer.
This is a fun, easy, hands-on way to get all your math concepts in each week and the kid's love it. You will even get to make some things to get you started and access to a file where you will find many resources to use. We will use everyday items you have in your cabinet and ideas you see on social media. If you've been to this workshop before, you can attend again because it will be a different format this time. An examination of classroom design through the lens of the book "A Burglar's Guide To The City", which details the link between burglary and architecture. We'll apply the lessons within the book to a discussion and exploration of the relationship between the teachers' role as a system designer, the role of the disobedient child in pushing against and exposing flaws within those systems, and why I stopped getting upset with poor behaving students in my classrooms and instead started listening to what they were telling me about my design choices.

In this session, teachers will learn about a multisensory modality for teaching young children letters and sounds. They will also learn engaging strategies that reinforce phonological and phonemic awareness skills such as alliteration, onset and rime, beginning and ending sounds, and more - great for early learners, special education and EL students!
Deepen your students’ understanding of energy and energy transfer with paper circuits! Participants will be given the opportunity to design and create paper circuits that demonstrate the flow and transfer of energy from a battery to a lightbulb. The idea that the paper circuit can create a more concrete understanding for an abstract idea will hopefully resonate with all participants, and their students, in a unique way. Participants will become completely engaged in this hands-on activity!

Vocabulary knowledge is crucial for understanding what is read and significantly influences how well students read and comprehend text. This session will provide the science on why vocabulary knowledge is important and how to implement vocabulary instruction in the classroom.
Participants will explore and consider the resources available through the Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks which accompany, clarify, and enhance the Oklahoma State Academic Standards for Social Studies. We will explore Instructional Resources, which include Lesson Ideas, Inquiry Tasks, Primary and Secondary Sources correlated to grade levels and subjects along with different types of Formative Assessments provided by the Frameworks.

In this hands-on session, we will point out some of the most commonly recommended modifications, check out some of our students' ELAPs, and ensure you leave understanding how to provide your ELs with the recommended supports.
Conscious Discipline builds social-emotional learning for teachers and students through self-regulation. Teachers spend less time on the reward/punishment structure and foster an inclusive, skill-building classroom family atmosphere. EPS elementary is currently on year four of Conscious Discipline implementation, so students entering middle school will have a base from which to continue to build SEL skills.
In theatre, students need to feel safe and comfortable with one another in order to get up and speak/perform. Many of the activities we use are applicable in the core classroom and can help with classroom management as well. In this session, participants will learn how to engage students in activities that build a classroom community. Participants will engage in each activity presented.
What is fluency, and how does it fit into the science of reading? Participants will learn what components make up fluent reading and how to use science of reading practices to promote fluency in their classrooms. Teachers will come away with activities they can use in their classrooms to promote fluent reading.

How do we fit all the instruction into the day? How do we utilize student interest and address the needs of the diverse learners in our classrooms?
We will learn research based strategies and routines to differentiate and scaffold district literacy resources (such as Heggerty, Into Reading, and Structured Literacy Foundational Skills). Then look how to incorporate Social Studies, Science, and Vocabulary instruction within these literacy routines by using "engagement kits".
Engagement kits include simple props, read alouds, and music. The purposeful play that the engagement kits creates allows for cross curricular instruction especially with Social Studies and Science, it helps develop oral language and vocabulary, and gives our students experiences beyond the classroom. I have 5 engagement kits to share but the possibilities are endless as we look at student interest and relevancy. Engagement kits can be used across all content areas and are a great way to elevate your daily literacy routines.
You will experience these literacy strategies through participation with the engagement kits!
You will have time and resources to make an instructional plan to align your literacy instruction with other subjects such as Science and Social Studies.
